Service GX85 Belts


Check Adjustment of Mower Engagement Rod (PTO)



1. Move PTO lever completely forward.
2. Raise mower to highest setting: Setting 4. Nipples on rod (A) should pull away from PTO bracket (B).
3. Move PTO lever completely rearward.
4. Lower mower to lowest setting:
Setting 1. Nipples should touch PTO bracket.
5. If nipples on rod do not pull away from PTO bracket when mower is in highest setting, see Adjusting Mower Engagement Rod (PTO) in this section.
6. If nipples on rod do not touch PTO bracket when mower is in lowest setting, see Adjusting Mower Engagement Rod (PTO) in this section.


1. Move PTO lever completely rearward.
2. Lower mower to lowest setting: Setting 1.
3. Loosen nut (A).


4. Pull engagement rod (B) forward until it is at front of slot (C).
5. Tighten nut.
6. Move PTO lever completely forward.
7. Raise mower to highest setting: Setting 4. Nipples on rod (D) should pull away from PTO bracket (E).
8. Move PTO lever completely rearward.


9. Lower mower to lowest setting: Setting 1. Nipples should touch PTO bracket.
10. PTO engagement rod is in proper adjustment when:
Nipples pull away from bracket when PTO lever is completely forward and mower is at highest setting: Setting 4.

CAUTION: Avoid injury! If brake arm cannot be adjusted to touch belt when PTO lever is completely rearward, see your John Deere dealer.




Brake arm (F) touches belt when PTO lever is completely rearward and mower is at lowest setting: Setting 1.

Removing Mower Belt (GX85)



1. Pull PTO lever completely rearward.
2. Put mower in the highest setting: Setting 4.
3. Remove two nuts (A), carriage
bolt (B) and belt guides (C).


4. Remove mower belt (D) from lower part of engine sheave (E).
5. Put mower in the lowest setting: Setting 1.
6. Remove spring locking pin (F) from mower draft link (G). Remove draft link from mower.
7. Put mower in the highest setting: Setting 4.
NOTE: Mower deck removed from riding mower for clarity. It does not have to be removed to change mower belt.


8. Loosen nut (H) and pull bracket (I) away from belt.


9. Remove belt (J) from V-idler (K) and flat idler (L).


10. Loosen nut (M) and pivot belt guide (N) away from belt.
11. Remove belt from sheave (O) by pushing against brake arm (P).

Installing Mower Belt (GX85)

NOTE: Mower deck removed from riding mower for clarity. It does not have to be removed to change mower belt.
1. Push PTO lever completely forward.


2. Pull belt between sheave (A) and brake arm (B).
3. Pivot belt guide (C) against belt until there is approximately 1 mm (1/16-in.) clearance.
4. Tighten nut (D).


5. Install belt (E) on V-idler (F) and flat idler (G).


6. Pivot belt guide (H) against belt until there is approximately 1 mm (1/16-in.) clearance.
7. Tighten nut (I).


8. Put mower in the lowest setting: Setting 1.
9. Install draft link (K) on mower with spring locking pin (J).
10. Push PTO lever completely rearward.


11. Install mower belt (L) on lower part of engine sheave (M).
12. Install belt guides (N) with nuts (O) and carriage bolt (P).
13. Tighten nuts.

Removing Drive Belt (GX85)

Before removing drive belt, study illustration below.


A - Flat Idler
B - Jacksheave
C - Flat Idler
D - Drive Sheave
E - Drive Belt


1. Lock park brake.
2. Remove two nuts (F).
3. Remove carriage bolt (G) and belt guides (H).


4. Remove drive belt (I) from upper part of engine sheave (J).
5. Remove belt from drive sheave (K).


6. Loosen nut (L) on idler (M) move belt guide (N) away from belt. Remove belt from idler.


7. Loosen and remove nut (O) on idler (P) and remove belt guide (Q). Remove belt from idler.

Installing Drive Belt (GX85)

Before installing drive belt, study illustration below.

Drive Belt


1. Turn belt inside out. Bring belt in from front of Riding Mower and place belt (A) on upper part of engine sheave (B) with "V" of belt in "V" of engine sheave.
2. Place belt on drive sheave (C).
3. Place belt under belt guide (D) on idler (E).

IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Belt guides must not rub on engine sheave.




4. Tighten nut (F).
5. Place belt around idler (G).
6. Install belt guide (H) and nut (I).
7. Tighten nut (I).


8. Check belt to MAKE SURE it is installed on all idlers.
9. Install belt guides (J) with carriage bolt (K) and nuts (L).
10. Tighten nuts (L).
11. Unlock park brake.
